• I WAS THE LAST ONE STANDING WHEN ALL THE GIANTS FELL •

A sigh left the goddess as she sat perched in her tower. Much earlier, before her precious sun arose, she had taken flight as a hawk to survey the desert sand of the mortal plane she was now trapped in. On the outskirts of the shadow of her tower, a makeshift shrine had appeared not too long after rumors (or rather truths) of the gods being cast down had come to light. She blamed the more...demonstrative of her kin for that. Her son being chief among them when it came to announcing his presence for all to bear witness. He was proud, and she could not blame him for that. After all, he was her son. But with his show, had come curiosity. Curiosity about the whereabouts of the other gods and goddesses. The clever among them were quick to make assumptions as to where she might have sought refuge, and the more devout had erected a shine in her honor. Bestowed upon it were various gifts. Wine, coins, weapons, armor, and various other plunders of battle. One time there had even been a calf; roasted & charred whole, presented at the base of it. And that twas an auspicious day for those who had catered to creativity. Say what you may about her, but she had always been one to reward her faithful. Just as she was one to smite blasphemers.

Tamtiane shared more of her kin’s cunning than most knew. And as for comparisons against her son: he fought wars, Tamtiane won them. Where he had gained an affinity for respect and honor from his father, she remained the one who the remorseless sung praises of while sacking the cities they had laid waste to. If they were smart anyway. The more tender-hearted fluctuated between fear and revulsion. A range no doubt created by ignorance. So few understood. Amongst the original pantheon, she did the hard things; the things no one else chose to; what no one else could. She scorched the earth so that Garion might breathe new life into it. She took the mantle of ruthlessness so that her sister’s people might live carefree. She choked the air in smoke so that Styren’s presence was known in its absence. She challenged Hentu’s unforgiving and impersonal logic. She balanced Zematri’s scales between contemplation and action so that stagnation did not arise. And Sunil? She was the absence of his shadow - in the light of her flame he’d have no darkness to sneak through. She warned the others he should be watched. She favored annihilation or incarceration, but instead she was outnumbered, and he was left to live like the mortal his father was in ignorance; something that did not last long. She did not understand how the other’s saw beauty or appeal in such fragile beings, let alone seek to breed with them.

Of those that poked their heads within the confines of her sanctuary, few returned. Most of them were dissolved to ash upon trying to provoke a response or proof of her might. Though others she did toy with; letting them roam the seemingly empty space before a sudden appearance on her part ended up startling and throwing them into the sand below from several stories. So far none had survived said fall, but she had taken the time to examine the corpses for a better understanding of how the humans worked before they too were ash amongst the dunes. Ever so rarely, she’d let them roam in peace, leaving them be to spread the story that she was absent of this place, so that no one else might seek to intrude.

It didn’t seem to work however. As still she’d catch glimpses of figures wandering too close to the imaginary border she patrolled. Typically a sudden noise or eruption of flame from the inert mineral under foot sent them running for their lives, but today was different. Two of them seemed to finally gather the determination to actually set foot in the structure, rather than continue to hover around like scavengers.

“This is a really bad idea.”

“What choice do we have? Conan wants information.”

“The choice to turn the fuck back around that’s what. I don’t care about the money, or what Conan says! What if it's true? What if she's really in here? I don’t know about you but I’m pretty sure you can’t spend the coin when you’re dead.”

“Yeah but she probably doesn't like cowards either, dumbass.”

“You should listen to your friend.”

Both men turned around before settling on each other as they simultaneously tried to find the source of the commanding feminine voice and decipher which of them she was referring to.

“I favor neither cowardice nor stupidity. Though in this case, the question is whether or not they are mutually exclusive.”

It was upon her coming into view that the two stood still as statues. As she approached, the heat coming from the flames licking her body caused sweat to fall from each man's brow. It was only when she was within arm’s reach did one of them turn to run. Ironically, the same man who insisted on staying just moments before. In an instant a wall of flame blocked his path and she set upon him like the hawk might a mouse. An ammonia saturated smell filled the air for a brief moment before she set her hands around his throat, the once man now turned to grey ash after a short-lived cry of agony roared above the sound of crackling and popping flesh.

Shame. She thought to herself, he could have had promise. But no matter, she only needed one after all.

“You. Boy.”

The remaining scout floundered, visibly shaking before his legs seemed to buckle and he landed cleanly on his knees, averting his gaze in what she could only presume was respect.

“You may look.”

It wasn't a request. But a command. One he obeyed.

“Who is your master?”

“Uhh, I…Conan?”

Before she could demand more he continued.

“Conan Alinari.”

“And why did he send you here?”

“In...inf..information. Ab...about the coast.”

The revelation sparked her own curiosity.

“Why not come himself. Do his own work?”

As a master tactician, she knew the importance of delegation, and reconnaissance. It wasn't a question to be answered. Though even if he wanted too, the man couldn't seem to find one within himself anyway.

“Tell this Conan, to come here himself if he so wishes this knowledge.” She was intrigued now.

“If he does not, none shall pass by this tower under his order and live. Any information you gather will die with you. And he will have nothing for all his efforts.”

Her tones were matter of fact, with no room for barter.

The scout nodded, though lingered still.

“Shoo now.” She removed the wall of flame entrapping them both, and the man quickly scuttered about to shift into his wolf form before fleeing from the tower with great haste.

Now. She would wait. She never entertained the possibility of a refusal.

Conan Alinari had sent two scouts to scour the perimeter of Tamtiane’s Tower, and only one had returned. Rumors had been snaking through the grapevine that a powerful being had taken up residence there, and as such few were willing to venture close to the northwestern coasts of Caldo’s old territory. For Conan, this had been nothing more than a minor setback on future plans – those open coasts were critical in any potential future naval fronts against Aver’s returning ports. When both scouts failed to return to him, however, the dead space of Tamtiane’s Tower suddenly rose in importance from an irritating setback to an active threat against the people of Attirac.

The remaining scout had done his duty well and came flying to Conan’s corner of the city, out of breath and clearly still frightened. He had told the eldest Alinari of a fiery woman who had incinerated the other scout, and while Conan had at first regarded the telling of events with skepticism, the adamancy of the scout had eventually spurred him to action. If it really was Tamtiane who had summoned him to her tower, he figured he ought to entertain a goddess’ wishes. If it was not in fact a deity residing there, then he would take care of the intruder personally.

The jaunt to Tamtiane’s Tower was a quick one on lupine paws. The golden wolf was a blur against the sandy dunes of the desert, a ripple of fur and purpose until the great building jutted up against the horizon. When he approached the entrance to the abandoned tower, Conan shifted back into his human guise, with short, unruly blonde hair and chest bared to reveal the array of scars across his flesh, testaments to battles fought and won, or lost but survived. With Lightbringer strapped to his back, he strode with suspicion but confidence into the tower, and as his crimson eyes adjusted to the relative darkness compared to the desert beyond, he slowly turned in a circle and craned his neck upward to stare at the spiraling heights above. “Well, here I am. So where are you?” He called into the nothingness, and waited.

• I WAS THE LAST ONE STANDING WHEN ALL THE GIANTS FELL •

Time and the passage of it here in this realm was new to her. Though, to someone who had no contact with age or decay, time sped by relatively quickly. It wasn't long before the sounds and sight of a disturbance among the dunes outside caught her full attention - a speck among the sands that gradually grew larger before shedding the guise Vyentane gave them and solidifying into that of the human Tienta had molded.

So this was Conan Alinari. In the time it took for her message to be passed and him to heed her summons, she had done some reflecting on such a name. It was her understanding that humans had two names, the latter of which they'd pass onto their offspring as a verbal brand of sorts - from what she could make of it. He shared that second name with one of her most promising warriors.

There were only a few occasions Tamtiane took interest in the affairs of mortal men and women. Conall Alinari had been one of those select few souls that caught had her attention. When his fleshy body had been consumed by her kin, she was the first to demand she be granted dominion over his soul. She had fought for him, and had won. She had given him free reign on his fate, eventually and helped him in his passage back into the energy of her eternal flames for well deserved rest. Though, Conall had left behind others he had been tethered to here: a wife and two sons by her. This Conan could very well be of his ilk, though she had to be sure.

After his declaration of arrival, the goddess flew down from her perch upon the broken railing of the spiraling staircase. Her talons had barely grazed the capping newel post before she morphed into a near blinding array of heated color and shimmering sand. She stood merely feet from him, pacing in a half circle to better look at the weapon strapped to his back, as her ethereal voice echoed through the emptiness of the structure. “I know the sword, but I do not know the man that now wields it.” From his confidence in his entry and her expectation, she presumed him to be the man she was awaiting. “I do hope you are an Alinari of Conall's brood.” It was a disgrace for anyone other than his heirs to wield such a weapon. One she would correct for herself if that was the case.

Conan was not a stranger to fear, but he had never allowed its existence to wield him. As any other mortal being would, when loss was inevitable and death was an all too real threat, he would feel the telltale signs of adrenaline coursing through his body, heightening his senses, empowering his muscles. Where some would use that strength to flee, he used it to fight harder and better. Conan Alinari was a creature of many faults, though his acknowledgement of them was wanting, but none could claim he was not a talented and ferocious warrior, cut from the same fiery cloth as his father.

A flash of light descended upon him, blinding at first, and Conan squinted at the flames to discern it was at first a hawk, and then a woman. She landed before him, prowling with an inhuman grace, and circled round as if to digest him with her eyes. The warrior regarded her silently, eyes following her movement while his body remained still and poised, ready to defend himself if necessary. It was not fear that gripped him now, but a heightened wariness mixed with skepticism and an infuriating sort of awe rendered from him against his will.

Whatever this creature was, it certainly was not human. That alone was apparent by her otherworldly voice and the extraordinary brightness of her flames. The heat of her wrapped around him in a searing embrace, and Conan felt both invigorated and overwhelmed by the strength of it, though he still refused to move. Even Lightbringer upon his back almost seemed to shiver with delight, its peculiar mix of metal alloys glowing as if it had been thrust back into the coals of an active forge. That she recognized his greatsword made a brow arch curiously, but the mention of his father brought up the other brow to meet the first. “I am his son.” he answered simply, his voice smooth and unaltered by the sense he had that he might be in very real danger. He had not answered the summons to come here and cower and grovel. “Why did you call me here?”

Her own flickering eyes stared into his, watching curiously as his pupils rapidly shrunk to mere pinpricks against a backdrop of crimson and gold. The degree of intricacy her parents had put into their final creation was fascinating at times. How something could be so strong, yet so fragile; how they could rage and yet they could love so intensely with that same passion.

Slowly, the goddess drew closer. His declaration of being the late Alinari’s son not entirely unbelieved, but she still thought it merited closer inspection. Despite her delicate-looking hands, her grip was firm and sound as she turned the warrior’s jaw, ignoring any displeasure or resistance that might have surfaced by her heated and unwarranted touch. Her gaze was appraising, as if he were a beast of burden up for action. He had Conall’s chin and the man's brawn, even if his hair was quite a bit more fair than that of his sire. While his youth was evident enough by his cocksure attitude and barely aged face, that wasn't an excuse for shutting children away. And the goddess was glad to see - whom she presumed to be his mother - pushed him out of the nest early. Nothing made boys into men faster than the likes of battle. The scars that marred the visible parts of his body told her enough of his experiences to know he had bloodied the blade on his back himself several times over, and the thought of its continued use pleased her.

Rounding the man, her attention focused back towards his weapon as ivory fingers slid down the length sharpened edge. Were she human, the blade would have easily drawn forth blood, but instead she remained unharmed by mortal-forged metal. Her admiration of human craftsmanship was cut short as the man she had summoned asked why he was called here, and the goddess drew away from him with a look of infinitesimal annoyance before answering.

“To hear what your interest is in the far shores.”

Caldonians were far from a seafaring people, but the Averians were, so she could see tactically why he might want eyes on them. But logically the Averians were in very poor shape to be launching the naval invasions they were famous for. “And, why you are sending men to trespass in my home.” She knew not Conan’s exact orders to his men, but the offense had been made regardless. And if actions of soldiers weren't the responsibility of their generals anymore, then the world had surely fallen from any sense of familiarity she once had with it in this vein.

In this exchange, Conan had not expected to be inspected so thoroughly. He had arrived ready to fight, if need be, or at the very least to eradicate whatever had incinerated one of his hired scouts, but instead this woman or goddess or whatever she was grabbed hold of his jaw and inspected him as if he were a prized steer. The young Alinari’s expression was immediately indignant and unamused, his red eyes flitted sideways and locked on her while his jaw set and teeth ground together. The examination seemed to placate her, if only briefly, and next he felt the minute amount of pressure of fingers upon his blade. Conan’s head turned slightly, watching her over his shoulder, until she circled back around again and their eyes locked once more.

“The western shores are the fastest route to Aver.” he answered bluntly, seeing no reason to hide his true intentions in Caldo’s beaches. Conan was often suspicious of people he didn’t know, but this woman was clearly one of them, if she wasn’t actually divine. “And it was once under Caldo’s control. By that alone, it should be returned to its original flag.”

At the mention of his scouts, however, Conan visibly bristled. Against his better judgment, perhaps, but that one of his men had died in the process of doing his bidding was still a sore spot. Caldo did not have the numbers it once did – each person was far more valuable than they had been prior, and now they had one fewer over seemingly no reason at all other than wounding her pride. “As for my men, I sent them here to see if the rumors were true that someone decided to call this their home.” His shoulders tensed and his lips twisted into a small snarl. “For my whole life, this tower was empty, yet you presume that you can just move in without warning and turn any who enter – people who are completely unaware of your presence – into ash?” For that alone he wanted to hurt her despite his less than peak health; the wounds of his prior encounter with a lycan were still in the process of healing. “You must either be a coward, or you’re hiding something. So which is it.”

He was ambitious, this spawn of Conall. She could tell he had inherited the warrior spirit and embraced it well. Did he wish to attack Aver once more? Or was it simply a display of strength, possible fortification in the hopes of keeping watch for Averian ships? Nevertheless it was intriguing, though she hadn't the chance to ask him further, before her previous comments had ruffled the man's feathers. The tension in the space rising with his challenge. He was brave, she'd give him that.

“I am no coward.” Her voice was level and authoritative, eyes locked on his with a heat within them that threatened to burst through the illusion of mortality she worked so tirelessly to create. “I punish cowards. And that is exactly what one of them was. You might have thought him valuable but what use is a cowardly man to any commander. What's to say he wouldn't have left you to die here, or elsewhere, instead when the potential for catastrophic failure reared its head?” He might not have known it, or appreciated it, but she had done him a service.

“I am hiding nothing from those who stay to ask the right questions.” It was mostly those that sought to provoke her or peddle bassless blasphemy that met an untimely end here. Those still loyal, or at least acknowledging, she left alone for the most part. Unlike her son she had no desire to announce her place of residence to the world. She was still feeling out this strange mortal place, and had little desire to wander from her chosen nest, for the moment anyhow.

In Conan’s eyes, there was no other explanation for the loss of one of his scouts save for this woman’s weakness, either in fear and cowardice or in secrecy. His crimson eyes were molten and unafraid, a sea of lava churning within golden, electric rings. He felt his anger surge as she offered poor explanations for the murder, but just as it had with the lycan in Attirac, it dissipated from his person before it could coagulate into true rage. For now, he was an unmovable boulder: stubborn, determined, and unshaken.

“That is a poor excuse for an unnecessary assassination.” He answered her, his words rumbling with a hint of deep rooted aggression despite his lax stance and even tone. “He was a scout, not a warrior. Meant to observer and nothing more. His carefulness is what helped him survive during the war, until you showed up.” It was not even that Conan particularly cared for the scout that had been incinerated, nor felt affronted by the loss. It was that someone would so unceremoniously incinerate one of his own and claim justification for it in a way that made it sound as though Conan should be grateful. There were far too few Caldonians left for that. No life was worthless anymore. Not even the ones with weak spines and flippant loyalty. They were useful in their own right, if used correctly. Conan had learned with time that finesse was sometimes required over simple brutality.

“I don’t know who you are, and frankly I don’t care. But you have two choices: If you are to remain here, you will do so without bringing further harm to my men. Or, I can see to it that you are removed, right here and now.” Given Caldo’s lack of control over this region, the warrior felt as though giving her the first option at all was rather generous of himself. He suspected, however, that this woman would not choose to leave willingly, and so his muscles were already visibly tensing, ready to unsheathe Lightbringer and chase her from this tower.
