As a fist collided with his nose, blood began to spurt down his face. Caspian dodged out of the way of another blow, ducking before bringing his own fist around to box in the man's ear. The punch sent the man stumbling backward, cursing as he did. Giving Caspian just the opportunity he needed to dart away. He was by no means the strongest but he made up for it in speed.

He was currently in the fighting arena, challenging one of the regulars. The grimy fighting pit was cramped, dirty and all around poor. And yet a hoard of people surrounded it, all screaming for whoever they placed bets on. And at the moment, it seemed most were screaming for his opponent. Though in his week or so of being in the city he had found it mattered little. The grimy pits could flip success in a matter of seconds. It was half the allure of the place to Caspian. The ever-changing competitors, spectators. Well, that and the hefty prize money for if he won.

The longer the fight, the more money it racked in. And this one had been going on for a while now. Both fighters had started off strong, just toying with each other. But it didn’t take long for real blows to start. Caspian had spent a lot of time, dodging fists working to tire out the other fighter. His opponent was a bit taller and definitely bulkier. Yet, he had gotten in quite a few hits. One or two scraping Caspian's side as he was too late to move. The normal punches to his forearms as he tried to block. Though the ones that really hurt were the two he had received in the face. One being a scratch upon his brow where the man's fingernail had caught. And the other being his now gushing nose.

With the man stumbling back it gave Caspian the opportunity to return to his blows. Ducking low, he started hammering his wrapped fists into the man's side. The cloth wraps kept of sharp edges, but his knuckles were still bloody and sore. As he punched the man, let out a roar and whipped around shoving him away. He slid to his balance on the dirt floor, before stopping again and delivering a punch to the man's face. His plan had seemingly worked as the other began to tire. Now the shots he threw were long and slow. Not really difficult for Caspian to swoop away from. All the while continuing his assault on the man's ribs and jaw.

The Underground really was a world all of its own. The rest of the realm had suffered during the decades of war and was left with a myriad of scars across its landscapes, but this city beneath the soil only seemed to grow stronger from the turmoil above. As ever, there were no rules here – or, well, there were, but the rules of this crime den matched none that Cefin knew on the surface – and debauchery in all of its forms was utterly regular and status quo here. Every time the young man found himself traveling to this particular place, there was at least an hour of adaptation that had to occur mentally before he wasn’t too distracted by his surroundings to function. The sights and sounds and smells, particularly, were foreign, often obtrusive, and always took re-getting used to.

Unlike many, Cefin Alinari did not come here for pleasure. If he had desired an evening with ladies of the night or a night full of drug-addled hallucinations, surely he could find both and more here, but the young man was here to work. The Underground was, among many other things, a melting pot of information and a hive of activity when it came to the bartering of knowledge.

That was how, despite not looking the part, Cefin ended up near the front of the spectators of a fight at the arena. The audience around him cheered and jeered, but it was not their cries of support or dismay that he paid any mind to. His golden eyes observed the two fighters: one close in age to himself, lithe and quick, and the other a far more haggard veteran of these gladiatorial affairs; but his ears were trained on the murmuring of conversations that surrounded him, hoping to hear something useful amongst the chaos. Another thought quivered in the back of his mind – a pet project, if you will – but for the moment he nudged those ideas aside. For that, he would need this current fight to end and find a way to unsuspiciously chat with one or both of its contestants.

As he hammered into the man’s ribs he knew he was doing at least some long-lasting damage. Bruised ribs were always quite troublesome especially if he wanted to fight again soon. As he was distracted with this he missed the side step as the man, threw a punch right into his stomach. Not having time to dodge it, he just ended up getting nailed back. His whole torso shot up with ache as his stomach seemed to come up. It also had the effect of taking most of his breath away, leaving him stumbling away and trying to force air into his lungs. The man came after him seeing the opportunity. But as the brute was coming at him, his weight got the better of him and he stumbled forward.

Not missing a beat, Caspian used the opportunity to throw a kick directly at his shins. His foot kicked off the man's right, leg sending him to his knee. Now on a knee, he was lower than Caspian giving him perfect aim at his head. He wound up before backhand slapping the man, across the face. His wrapped hand made it almost painless to him. However, the other man didn’t have much time to feel the pain before his other hand came up. His left hand went open palmed into the kneeling man's neck. The pressure threw him backward and to the floor, gagging as he went. He sat on the floor, heaving for breath that also seemed to refuse to come. But it mattered little, in this match, the winner was the last one standing and that was Caspian.

The cries of the audience went up almost immediately. Though in CCaspian's mind the move had seemed like slow motion it had happened in seconds. The mix of instinct and thought seemed to do that occasionally. As his mind accepted the win, his body began to relax. Adrenaline was still pumping through his system, causing him to forget most of the pain and just live in the moment. The crowds were still madly engrossed in the match screamed at the two in the pit. It was always strange to win a match and have people cheer. It brought him back to performing but always seemed like some twisted version. And yet, he was a performer a heart. He gave a tired grin and took an over exaggerated bow to the audience, before walking to the ringleader's desk in a sweeping motion. His brow and nose were still bleeding but they barely mattered compared to the winnings. Once at the desk, he drummed a beat upon it before stretching out to the shrew man behind it. Immediately, money was smashed into his hand with an unhappy growl. The ringmaster had taken a disliking to him, though it barely mattered. There would be a full out riot before the man refused to pay him his winnings. Even if he did tend to skim quite a bit off the top. Happy with the coins in his hand he turned back to the competitor's bench.

There his pack and water sat on a very welcoming seat. He went to it collapsing onto it with a sigh. The crowd had started to cool down now, already preparing and planning for the next match. New competitors came to the arena as the Caspian was dragged off. He seemed to be in quite the condition. A throat punch was quite painful, thankfully someone had gotten him off the field. As his gaze fell upon him the other fighter gave him a nod. Caspian returned it before twirling open his canteen. He didn’t hesitate to guzzle it down, the clear liquid seeming to clear up the haze of fighting. And as it did it seemed to take away the painkiller of adrenaline. His wounds came back with new gusto, causing him to flinch. He grabbed a rag from his bag and pushed it to his nose, trying to at least help with stopping the bleeding. It didn’t appear broken but it still hurt like hell. That was the main reason he decided to sit for a second instead of leaving, he found that his pain discouraged almost all movements.

As the fight carried on around him, Cefin unconsciously scrunched his shoulders up to muffle some of the volume battering his eardrums. He was better off in terms of psychological health compared to the many who had taken part in the war, but such extreme noise was still somewhat bothersome to him. At least the fighters in the ring were using their hands – the sound of metal clashing against metal was one that often sent his hair standing on end regardless of its context. The Underground, too, had a way of catching sounds and amplifying them so that the whole fighting area vibrated with the echoes of the passionate onlookers.

Fortunately, by the time the young Caldonian man had squirmed his way toward the front of the fight, the battle was nearly over. Before too long, the contestant that was in the same range as himself came forward as the victor, and the men and women crowding around Cefin either bellowed victoriously for having won a bit of money or cursed vehemently for having lost. He himself remained silent and began to sift his way through the jostling crowd around toward the competitor’s bench, where the winner had gone and sat himself down to rest up after the match.

At first, Cefin sidled up behind the low wall separating the audience from the fighters and the arena and simply leaned forward, crossing his arms and resting them upon that wall. He was skilled enough at looking casual despite very clearly having an agenda in mind, and so he remained patiently silent while the other young man drank the water from his canteen and tended to his bleeding nose. “That was a good fight.” Cefin spoke up at last, making sure that his voice carried enough without being too loud, despite the ringing that still carried on in his ears. “How long have you been down here, doing these matches?” He eyed this stranger curiously and amiably, making small talk for now that would hopefully lead in the direction of his search at some point.

The strip of cloth Caspian held to his nose was soon socked with the deep ruby red of blood. Though he didn’t bother to get a new one, knowing it would suffer the same fate. The pain in his nose was subsiding but it really only brought to light other pains. The one over his brow wasn’t deep but it still kept dripping down towards his eye. He swiped the cloth across, knowing it wasn’t the most sanitary thing but better than nothing. The small minute was enough of a break for him to catch his breath but now he knew he had to get around to his injuries. He knew he didn’t have the money or trust to go to a healer right now but he needed to make sure nothing was super serious. His face had been his first priority but there wasn’t much else he could do but soak up his nose. He ran a hand over his torso, feeling small bruises but nothing huge. His forearms were going to bruise from all the blocking but that was pretty normal for his fighting style. After all, he prefers hits to the arms over the face and stomach.

The part that always caused the most was his hands though. They were wrapped in dirty cloth to at least help but it barely mattered. Blood could be seen through the fabric and he already knew it would be a pain. As he started to unwrap his hands a voice came from behind him. He turned to see a man leaning up against the wall and apparently talking to him. He mentioned it was a good fight and Caspian took the moment to gaze at him. The man seemed to only be an inch or two taller and seemed of similar age. Caspian’s eyes took just a moment to take in his narrow face and dark hair before being distracted by his crimson and gold eyes. It seemed like quite the interesting feature to Caspian and he wasn’t sure if he had ever seen such before. To the man’s question, Caspian simply offered a nod, not bothering to stop unwrapping his hand. Though a smirk came to his face as he finished the statement.

“Glad you enjoyed it,” he said not bothering to stop unwrapping. Caspian wasn’t exactly sure what the man was after or if he simply wanted to make the statement. There were hundreds of fights down here, and in his eyes, his was average at best. Besides the fact he won there wasn’t much to note. As he took the wrapping off, revealing his bloody knuckles the man spoke again. He inquired about his history in the matches. Though he was in pain he wasn’t dulled enough to just give out information without a reason.

“Why do you want to know, sweetheart?” he said in honeyed tones. The endearment was added without a thought as he started on the next wrapping. He looked to the man, with a disinterested glance but his usual smirk on his lips. He couldn’t fathom a good reason the man wished to know. His mind, however, searched for a bad one either. As far as he knew he hadn’t done anything exactly terrible the last few weeks. Just fighting every day and cheating in gambling at night. He had always been careful enough with that he doubted anyone could know.

The gathering of information was often a longshot. Cefin had grown used to failure when he traded his scout days for a profession with a decidedly more complicated purpose. Normally, he traipsed around the neutral territories in search of information regarding the traveling ambassadors or warriors of other nations, however. His older brother was quite fond of tasking him with extended stays in Riverrock or Miador in hopes of gleaning movements and advancements in Aver or Tyrgere. Sometimes, Cefin came down to The Underground in search of political persons who he knew dabbled in debauchery as a means to intercept them and blackmail information out of them. Most often, they had guards with them, and Cefin was sent away empty-handed but in one piece. Sometimes, he got lucky and returned home with useful information.

This time, Cefin wasn’t here for his brother or for Caldo. A new friend of his was searching for answers in her own life, and he had made a silent decision to help her, where he could. She had no idea of his involvement, and he planned to keep it that way as long as he had nothing to share.

The Underground was a longshot. This young man of his age was a longshot. But when he turned his bloodied face to look him in the eye, the apparent teal color of his irises filled the young man with a brief flicker of hope. He ran a hand through his black hair, mussing it into awkward angles but ignoring its disheveled appearance. He smiled an easy smile, shrugging his slope shoulders, and gazed back out at the empty arena while they shared their first words with each other. In truth, Cefin wasn’t sure how to bring the topic up smoothly, and he certainly wasn’t the most skilled at idle small-talk without it being clear he’d come over with a purpose.

“I am wondering how well you know the other fighters down here.” he answered honestly and smirked a bit at the tone and added endearment to the tail of this stranger’s introduction, but he let it slide without bothering to put any thought into it. “There’s someone I’m looking for.” Cefin left it at that for now, his two-toned eyes briefly sliding back from the arena to trail over the bloodied man in front of him. In truth, he had little to offer in return other than a few extra silver pieces or information on his own end, but it was worth a try.

Caspian watched in slight amusement as the man ran a hand through his hair, messing up his hair as he did. Though it couldn’t be much worse than Caspian’s locks, raven hair flew every which way. He watched as the man looked away and tried to guess if he was about to be lied to. The thought crept into his head before the man had even spoken and he forced himself to push it aside. He was pretty sure he had never been this suspicious of people before he moved here. Now the moment someone spoke to him he questioned it. And yet, he didn’t really ever feel threatened any more than an inconvenience. Dealing with those with ill-will always seemed manageable at worse. However, this man didn’t come around like the normal trouble. And it left Caspian actually curious about him.

In another breath, the man spoke and said of his wondering. Caspian looked at him with an arched brow, craving more information. It seemed the stranger was actually after something. His motive was starting to be woven into Caspian's mind but it was still blurry. He said he was looking for someone though didn’t say who. “Hmm,” said Caspian thinking it over as the man's gaze came back to him. “Well, I don’t know if I know this ‘someone’ you talk of,” he said standing from the bench. The small break had felt nice but now he was intrigued. He moved to the railing, leaning against it leaving a good space between them.

“But, I do know the fighters, most of them anyway. And those I don’t know I can meet,” he said, tipping his head to the side slightly. Knowing fully well his statement was true. Even though if he didn’t get along with someone he was still an amazing actor. Seeking out and getting on people’s good side seemed to be a rather good skill he possessed. It didn’t matter much though for he already knew most everyone in the fighting business. After all, he fought them on regular occasions and was squished into this city with them.

His grin still played his face as he looked at the other man, not hiding his eyes scrolling over him. “Though I am curious, what would I receive in exchange for such information?” he asked, knowing the other man probably expected as much. Caspian wasn’t exactly sure what he wanted from the man but he would wait. He wanted to see what the man would offer before he placed his own.

In truth, Cefin expected little from his ventures down into The Underground. The tendency for people to be mistrusting and uncooperative far surpassed the few times he had asked questions here and actually received answers. His easy-going nature prevented him from becoming too disheartened by common failure, but he could not help let a little flicker of pleasant surprise flash across his face when the other young man stood up from his bench and approached him, rather than walking away. His two-toned eyes watched him easily, intrigued by the vague but also seemingly honeyed cadence of his voice. The stranger was not exactly offering to be helpful, but thus far he seemed to be willing to at least entertain Cefin’s musings, and that was enough for him at the moment.

For now, he kept the who of his questions quiet. The name itself carried enough weight that tossing it around frivolously would not only negate his slight power of intrigue he had momentarily over this other man, but it could very well put the both of them in danger if the wrong ears were listening. Still, that truth did not seem to effect Cefin, who lounged almost lazily where he leaned, and he kept his eyes relaxed but fixed on the other.

“I can offer information in turn, perhaps.” He responded first, starting with the easiest and most logical option given the nature of the exchange. With another soft shrug, he cocked his head a bit and smiled languidly again. ‘Or coin, but I don’t carry much with me. Are you after something in particular? Perhaps we can be of mutual benefit to one another.” Cefin was not a manipulative man, nor an individual with any lingering hostilities in his heart, but he knew when to play his cards and when to keep them close. A single black brow arched curiously, expectantly, and he watched the other with just the smallest fragment of hope daring to peek through the cracks.
