Kaedyn trotted slightly ahead of his sister, his nose raised and his ears alert for any danger. She was fairly relaxed, confident in their ability to reach Miador without trouble, but he was the one who had sat through the tales of battle. He took his father’s wish for him to protect his sister very seriously. For that matter, he was quite willing to do anything to keep her from having to experience anything like the horrors his father had confided in him about what their mother had gone through, that had made her so fragile for quite a while. Silently, Kaedyn had admired his father’s patience, and thought that his wait for their mother to be ready to be with him showed a great deal of respect, and spoke of the love between them

But little of this mattered just at this moment. They were approaching the enormous lake that was in the center of the continent, and its shore was to be their resting point. He refused to allow his sister to simply walk out into the open before he scouted ahead though, and she, thankfully had allowed his worried self to do so.

So far, he saw nothing. Nothing but a great expanse of water, and the shore that surrounded it. The area they were at was clear, stretching for quite a distance before returning to forest, after he listened and looked carefully, his tail lifted, wagging in signal to his sister that all was safe. Kaedyn waited until she was at his side, brushing his muzzle across her scruff before leading the way to the water. The water from the lake was crisp and cold, sitting like a cube of ice in his stomach for a few moments before his body’s heat warmed it, and he looked at his sister.

”We might be able to make it before nightfall if we pick up our pace a bit. Unless you’d rather camp out beneath the stars one more time.” He licked remaining drops of water from his muzzle and looked around alertly, ever wary of the dangers Kylar had warned him might still lurk within Eudocia.

The trip to Eudocia had been uneventful, albeit a bit chillier than when they normally traveled, but she had been unwilling to wait for the warmer months to travel as she wanted to be there and established by then, to allow more time to see... everything! Traveling by ship, horseback on foot or paw was nothing new to the young pair headed to Miador. What was different was that it was just the two of them. She had quietly bulldozed her parents and Kaedyn into getting her way, lest she loose her mind cooped up now that the idea had hatched in her head.

It was hard to believe that her parents had allowed them to go and she just knew that she would be grateful to them forever for the opportunity and that in the end it would be simply amazing, all around. Especially with Kaedyn to experience it all with her. She wagged her plush white tail as he searched ahead to ensure that it was safe. Other than those surrounding the dock when the ship had arrived they had seen no one. Most were likely already home in their warm houses, but she was too excited to worry about the cold. Her lush coat could handle this weather easily.

She joined him by the lake, jade green eyes going wide at the view of the huge expanse of water surrounded by trees all around and the crisp sky reflecting off of it's surface. They had heard tales of this. Maybe not this exact spot, but adventures surrounding the Great Lake, most of which seemed to center in or around Miador. "It's so beautiful!" Lowering her head she lapped at the cold water, careful not to drink too fast and give herself a chill, although she was far thirstier than she thought. Her gaze met his as he spoke and her lips pulled back against her teeth in a wolfish grin and her tail wagged excitedly. "Then let's pick up the pace, slowpoke!" She laughed and gave his ear a playful tug before she took off at a slow lope in the direction of the rogue village.

He basked in his sister's delight. There was nothing that made him so happy as when Khiree was smiling and happy. And she was happiest when she was traveling. He wouldn't admit it, but he was also happiest while travelling, and hadn't really looked forward to his parents settling down with their younger sibling. Would that child also turn into a wanderer? Silently, he hoped that, just maybe, his parents might return and settle their deep roots here, in their old home. It would be years of exploration to study this place so thoroughly as where they had traveled other places in the world.

Kaedyn moved to dodge his sister's excited attack as she told him to pick up the pace and started loping away. Worry shot through him. "Khiree! Don't go too far ahead!" He still took his duties and promises to his father very seriously, though they laid down so close to his own wants to protect his twin that it wasn't hard to motivate him to do so. His creamy fur pushed closer to his skin as he bolted after his sister and he nipped fondly at her shoulder as he caught up to her, slowing his run to match her lope.

Nearly a perfectly matched pair, he grinned as he ran alongside her. His own fur was dusted with color while hers was a perfect, ethereal white. She looked like what he imagined a ghost or spirit might look like. Pale and almost not of this world. No woman was so beautiful as his sister.

Briskly, he stepped up his pace a little bit, getting a few steps ahead so that any traps or scouts would find him first. Anything to make sure she was safe. It was some distance to Miador yet, and who knew if the place had truly remained safe?

She shook her head inwardly at his worrying. Not that she didn't discount it, but it was so ingrained in him to look out for her that whether there was trouble or not, he always seemed to be imagining what could happen. Part of her understood easily, but she was so used to exploring and sating her curiosity that sometimes it became a hindrance. One that frustrated her, but in no way dampened the love that she held for him and the rest of her family that were every bit as protective. But being a 'worldly' traveler so early in life filled her with the need to spread her wings. Granted, she wasn't always as bold as she felt right now. She was quieter by nature, but not so much as her mother. Khi had heard so many stories of this place over the years that it hardly seemed unfamiliar to her and she knew that Kaedyn would always look out for her... just as she would for him.

It felt amazing to stretch her legs after the too-long ship ride, almost as amazing as feeling the wind ruffle her plush snow-white pelt as Kaedyn caught up to her and matched his pace to hers. It was a simple joy that filled her and made her green eyes sparkle with love and happiness bright enough to pick up on even without the aid of words to mess with perfection. Well, perfection would be having the rest of their family here too, but this was definitely as close to it as she could imagine in this moment. After a while she slowed to a trot and then down to a walk and her brother matched her once more, staying protectively close to her. Her tongue lolled out of her mouth and she panted a bit. "I guess all that time on the ship has sapped a bit of my stamina," she admitted ruefully. They had not strayed far from the water's edge and she made her way over to it to slake her thirst once more.

She sat and gazed out over the huge expanse of water, wondering what all would await them in their explorations. It seemed wonderfully daunting to the young shifter, perhaps finally hitting her that she and Kaedyn were really doing this on their own. It was hard to believe that her mother had been on her own for two years by the time she had met their father at seventeen. How had she done it then? It was almost impossible to imagine her mother in any context other than with her father, but they had shared their stories with their children and answered what questions they had been able to. "Can you imagine Mother out here, all on her own?" she asked as she looked her brother's way. If Keelie had done it, she could as well... but even with that thought, she was immensely relieved to have her twin with her.

Kaedyn reveled in the freedom of running as a wolf, the wind flying through his fur. Though he kept up with his sister easily, he resisted the urge to power himself forward even faster with the element he'd inherited from his father. Instead, like the guard he had always been, he stayed at his sister's side, matching her pace even as she finally slowed. His own stamina had been damaged by the long ride, and he paced by her to drink from the lake as well, an ear tuned to the dangers and one tuned in to his sister.

Her voice was filled with a sort of awe that he felt but didn't show as he looked around their parents homeland. He understood why they had fled it, the very land still screamed out about the war that had raged across it, but it was lesser now. His voice came with a hint of disappointment. "Honestly, I think it was silly of our uncle to let her wander without him. She got into so much trouble, Khi." He bumped his shoulder against hers just slightly, smiling. Their mother had made it on her own, but he was going to make sure his sister never had to worry like she had.

Despite how much good had been in their lives, the lives both of their parents had led were also fraught with danger. Kylar had fought in defense of the queen, Keelie had wandered alone before she was ever of age. It was pure luck that neither of them had died. He didn't want anything like that to happen to his sister. "How far to Miador do you think?"

She had gotten in a lot of trouble, but she had also experienced so much life as a teenager. Khi knew that there were dangers all around. She might be a gently adventurous free spirit, but she was a realist too. But much like her mother she put her faith in the world and trusted first and questioned later. It had gotten Keelie into trouble, but it had also gotten her out of it because there was as much good in the world as bad. More, she liked to think personally.

"Perhaps so, but he didn't have much of a choice. He was trying to protect her. It just... went sideways." Their uncle Faolan had tried to lead the true and known danger away from his younger sister, but the fates had kept them apart for two years.

Khi looked from the lake to the unseen forest beyond it, where they were headed and tried to recall the stories, if any had given better reference points to match up with the dock worker that she had spoken to before they had headed out. "Maybe another two or three hours, if we keep a steady pace, I think?" They could run more, but it would just tire them out. Better to pace themselves and not be dead exhausted by the time they arrived. And vulnerable if she added in Kaedyn and her father's mentality.

The young she-wolf leaned into her brother, loving the contact and taking comfort even though she was not afraid. Everything was just new and different and not having their parents with them was a first for such an adventure. But they had each other and that would always be enough.

Kaedyn frowned a little, ears flicking back in disapproval. Despite the tale, and how supposedly Faolen had led danger away, he didn’t like how his uncle had left Kheelie alone. It was lucky Kylar had found her up in that tree instead of some ruffian, and even then, their mother had still fallen into horrible custody. He took comfort in his sister’s contact, in her acceptance of him being her protector, and his muzzle slid across her scruff affectionately. Silently, he vowed to never repeat the mistakes of his uncle and leave his sister to fend for herself.

Perhaps, his father’s paranoia had more merit than either of them gave it credit. But the young man didn’t dwell on it just yet. Instead, he nudged his sister playfully and grinned at her. ”Come on then. A steady trot should do us good.” He started off around the shore once more, his nose pointed towards Miador.
