Word had it that these waters were holy. For all her gallivanting around, Lenya had keen ears that caught onto the whispers of mortals and the rumors that spread between them like wildfire. From what she could glean, Rukieh’s River had been christened a safe haven despite the onslaught of bloody battles and the determination these kingdoms seemed to have for destroying each other. As one of the last remaining places where travelers could apparently walk without being assaulted, a well-worn path now meandered alongside the river’s easy bends, and from a distance away no fewer than a dozen thin tendrils of smoke revealed the locations of small campsites set up by merchants and wanderers and all sorts of other fascinating professions.

Lenya, of course, did not simply strike out and walk through the Rukieh’s River pathways so blatantly. Instead, she chose a more invisible method – she had slipped to the edge of the neutral forest and shifted into one of her many shapes, that of a black widow spider. To pass the time, while foot traffic was low, she constructed herself a wonderfully intricate web of silk just above the pathway, and when a passerby finally came just beneath her spun threads, she released herself and landed upon his shoulder.

For a time, she simply rode along with the swing of his strides, using her eight nimble legs to crawl around the back of his shirt and cling to the fabric between his shoulder blades on the off chance he might notice her perched on his shoulder and attempt to crush her. In the end, however, delicious secrecy became utterly boring in its lack of action, so the black spider crawled back around to his left shoulder and, with an almost human air of boredom, flicked its front two limbs in front of her and inspected their barbs as though they were dirty fingernails. “I should have waited to hitch a ride with an insane person that takes to having conversations with themselves. This silence is so very dull.”

Lenya’s voice was surprisingly clear for a spider. Musical and ethereal and strong, even, as though an invisible woman were walking just adjacent to this man and had spoken out of nowhere. Her abdomen waggled, and tiny, prismatic and unnaturally silver eyes observed this human with cool curiosity. In truth, she hoped to shock him into an entertaining fit, but any reaction would be better than this wordless wandering through a forested River that was supposed to incite awe and wonder from its inhabitants.

His heart was a twisted thing, not without compassion but very much so a jaded thing. With a push or two, it could turn to stone and he would be left apathetic and cruel. However, everyone was a little twisted. Everybody went a little mad. Everybody died. Simple facts of life those were. He might have been uncontrollable, visceral, even a little more than impulsive- but it was life. It was fun. He very much enjoyed his mortality, and he would enjoy it to reckless extremes if given the opportunity. His reserves of diligence and caution were more than empty, they were nonexistent. What else could you expect from a man who had nothing left? Icarus ran a hand through his hair, the boredom he felt was a bit-no, amazingly excruciating. He needed a distraction, but at the moment he was just taking a stroll through the woods. A stroll. Icarus had no ambitions, no beliefs, but he did believe in luck. Where he was going was of little concern. It was the possibility of what he could experience that intrigued him. He didn’t care what this particular patch of land was called, and he certainly didn’t care if it was dangerous. He merely wanted something to happen. Yet, Fate was taking her sweet time.

Unbeknownst to him, a little spider tagging along for the trek would be just what he was hoping for.

The beauty of the landscape was not as lovely to the eyes of Icarus as it might have been to anyone else. So, slowly he began to change what he saw. It was little things here and there, making a flowers petals bloom into something like a dragon’s head, and the illusions continued to appear as he walked, only dissipating as he passed them by. It was not much, but making his surroundings strange was enough to at least curve his lips into a smile. A small, private preview of art. Though, hearing a voice so close to you without ever sensing another soul… was indeed startling. Where were they? That voice to which he turned to swiftly seemed disembodied. Speaking of insane people and dull silences. Well, it was not the oddest thing to ever happen to him- so he played along after a pause in his step. A dramatic hand rising to grip the clothing above his heart. “I am hurt. What, am I not insane enough for you? I was beginning to believe we had a connection.” The slight coo in his voice hinted at playfulness. His skull turned this way and that, searching for the faceless companion without success. How could he have guessed she would be a spider sitting the one place he overlooked?

From atop this man’s shoulders and with eight eyes instead of two, the world was a new and curious thing. Peering at him from this close proximity, Lenya could only really make out the roots of facial hair scattered across his jaw and cheek, the slope of his earlobe, and the curvature to the bridge of his nose. The rest was all quite a blur, for even as a deity she was woefully locked into the limitations of the forms she chose. Despite the general lack of being able to see this man, or her personal mount, as it were, the vibrations of his voice traveled easily through his body and up through her eight nimble limbs to resonate through her entire ebony carapace.

His reply was amiable, easily going along with this disembodied voice he heard, and Lenya surprisingly did not find herself disappointed by this. Rather, amusement had her flexing her tiny fangs in a wordless, arachnid response. When it became apparent that he had not yet seen the spider perching atop his shoulder, his close head turning this way and that, a bell-like laugh came from the same direction her voice originally had traveled from, and this time she reared up on her two hind limbs, using the anterior four to wave at him and perhaps grab his attention. While only a spider, for a spider she was not small, and most certainly not harmless either. Still, her dancing did not suggest any hostile agendas toward this person carrying her through the wilderness.

“Have you been holding out on me, noble steed?” she chimed, playing along with his dialogue. “If you truly are insane, I might remain a while longer… but I will warn you – I require constant entertainment.” Each one of her eight silver eyes blinked in unison, and her front appendages rubbed together expectantly.
