Someone had been following her, ever since her trip to Ombra. Several someones, in fact, and they proved surprisingly persistent. What their purpose was, Ruth didn't know, and she wasn't in the habit of asking anything of anyone willing to stalk her across continents. Worse yet, after a subtle attempt at poisoning her in a nearby inn, she knew these people wished her nothing good. Thankfully, she didn't drink enough of the stuff to kill her, but it did slow her down while her natural healing ability worked against the toxins.

This evidently made her chasers all the more impatient, pressing ever closer to try and finish her off. They grew greedy and brash, following her straight into the burning forests without thinking. It was then that the tides turned, and Ruth began picking them off one by one. She blended in perfectly with the reds and yellows of the forest, both in and out of her wolf form. They didn't know what hit them, as the experienced warrior led them on a merry chase through the forest during the day, all the while turning to murder in the dead of night, when shadows danced from the eternal flames.

But even Ruth had her limits. Tired from days of little sleep, and weakened by poison, a single misstep led her into an open skirmish with a handful of her stalkers. Few of them dead and dying, and a wound upon her side from a blade later, and Ruth finally decided to tuck tail and run. She had cauterized the wound as soon as she had the chance, but all the same had lost enough blood to make her woozy. She would live, as long as the blasted thing didn't get terribly infected and she found a safe place to rest and heal.

Presuming she could find one or manage to drag herself to her hidden camp.

Ruth rushed through the forest, tugging on the earth under her feet to keep herself from crashing into some random burning tree. Her usual steel armor she had discarded a while back, as it didn't help her blend in. Which only left her with the leather vest for armor, something that in the end didn't stop the enemy's blade from slicing right on through. Even her sword wasn't there, left behind because she couldn't carry it and move swiftly in her wounded state.

Her options dwindled quickly. For a moment she contemplated shifting into a wolf, but she didn't have the time for that. Her enemy on the other hand did. She could hear a few barks behind her mingling with human voices.

Ruth rumbled a curse under her breath to that and swatted one hand at a nearby tree. Already tilted, the thing creaked and crashed when her magic shifted the earth away from its roots. That ought to buy her at least a few seconds, especially after she coaxed the flames upon the burning log to roar up and hide her from sight. Ruth moved along, not bothering to look behind her. Trusting her instincts to warn her if her enemy caught up with her.

Perhaps a minute later, however, her head began to swim too much, forcing her to take shelter behind a particularly large tree. Ruth rested her back against the wide trunk, taking ragged breaths, one hand clutching at a hunting knife as she tried to think of a plan. Any plan that wouldn't get her killed. So far she had been clever, engaging in sneaky warfare to increase her odds of survival.

She just wasn't clever enough, it seemed.

Shayne had fell to wandering the ever-burning forest. It was a nice change from wandering the charcoal forest of his home, the burnt world in which he now lived. So he sat, manifested within the realm just enough to see it clearly, to be seen, and stared at the flames. It was calming for the old wolf. Thoughts drifted slowly and slowly came to a stop as he meditated. It was easier now that he was a ghost than it had been while he was alive. At least, for a while.

It wasn’t long before one of the urges he got so often pulled him out of his strange reverie, and he moved towards it automatically. Its urgency even urged him into a run, and he let himself fade from the material realm to move quicker towards it. He came into an area just in time to watch a single burning tree fall, a figure having pushed it over. It had to have used magic. Even he hadn’t been strong enough to uproot these trees. The figure moved away swiftly, and the urgency went with it. But there was still something. Were they fleeing? They had sent a tree to the ground… to block someone’s path?

He waited, letting the figure move ahead. As they did, he narrowed his gaze. That walk… female, definitely… but why was it so familiar? He let the moment pass, watching for whoever the figure ran from. They were not far behind. Even as they passed through, obviously tracking. Shayne rumbled softly to himself as they skirted the flaming tree, clearly intent upon catching their victim. Stalking after them, he eyed each of them. There were four of them, and one moved with a bit of a limp, a damp bandage wrapped around his thigh.

Idly he mused for a moment. He was summoned for a reason. He always was. So he trotted after them and got ahead, searching for, and after a short moment finding, the figure they’d been chasing. The face he saw there had him frozen in his tracks. Ruth. He had met few that could match her in personality. She had blended the stubbornness of earth with the fury of fire in such a manner that she was difficult to beat in battle, and he had helped train her as she grew up. She had been formidable by the time the war came around, and had only hardened through it. He had not found her for years. Of all of those he cared for at all, she was safer, having been safely attached to Caldo, secure in home and work.

A snarl came from him, not audible in the material realm, and he trotted back around the tree to look for her attackers. They were not far. Without hesitation, he stepped from one realm to the other, and without warning, launched himself into battle, a furious ball of fur and flame. His teeth snapped. One down, Another hamstrung, and the other two staring at him with a mixture of shock and fury at his flame ridden appearance. He let out a vicious snarl as he launched for the man with a wounded leg, bowling him over and snapping blood-stained jaws at his throat.

Sounds of battle reached her ears, eerily close to her position. There were wordless shouts of warning and shock, permeated with yelps and growls. Ruth scowled at the cacophony, trying to judge and weigh the situation by sound alone. One, two met their deaths at least, and it prompted the warrior to dare peek around her tree to look.

A slight ways away, a big, black wolf lunged at her attackers time and again, in motions that were unmistakably familiar. He seemed different, yet same. Younger, yet with ghastly flames and blood staining him like she'd never seen it before. But it was still him. Still Shayne.

Ruth blinked at the sight, stunned for half a second before the pressing matter of battle dawned on her. Gritting her teeth, she pushed herself away from her hiding tree, steps as careful as she could manage while she stalked forward.

The last remaining foe stood, distracted by the black wolf. It was a novice mistake, really, being stunned and not keeping an eye on his surroundings. It allowed Ruth to sneak up behind him, and sink the hunting knife once, twice, thrice into his flesh, motion merciless and quick. The man crumbled to the ground in a heap, almost managing to drag Ruth down with him how unstable she was.

But she stayed on her feet, swaying slightly after she stumbled away. She gave an annoyed growl at that, wiping the blood off her blade against her sleeve as her amber eyes went to the large wolf.

Silence sank in quickly.

Had he not murdered her attackers, she would've thought him a figment of her imagination. But he was there, standing before her, looking better and worse than ever at the same time. Ruth stared at him, eyes slightly wide but the look on her face far from the mouth-gaping shock that most would have. Her expression remained her usual stern scowl, though her posture gave away much of her weakness and fatigue.

"......Pops?" Ruth managed after a moment, voice bewildered. "What... what the hell?" The woman said, hesitating to sheathe the knife as she peered. She hadn't heard a lot about ghosts, but knowing Shayne, his shade would be undoubtedly a violent one. Possibly irrational.

How violent and irrational, was the worry upon her mind as she stood there, conflicted about what to do.

His jaws snapped closed around the man’s throat sweet, coppery blood flowing over his teeth and tongue as his weight brought the man down. Oh, how he loved that taste. Shayne swallowed as he released the now dead bandit, maroon eyes focusing upon Ruth in time to see her knife the last man, who had stood stunned at the appearance of Shayne. Her eyes stared at him now, wide with shock, but her scent wasn’t tainted by the bitterness of fear. Her hand still clung to her blade and she watched him warily. Good. But she couldn’t hide the fatigue and weakness from him. These men had been after her for a while.

He rumbled a growl audibly as a wolf, though his voice reached her mind and not her ears. ”Ruthalla.” His ears flicked into a disapproving slant, flames still licking around him in excitement from the tush of battle. His jaws moved fresh blood mixing with old as he ran his tongue over them. ”I taught you better than this. These men should have reached death days ago, long before you reached the state you are in.” Shade or ghost he certainly was, and just as violent as he had been in life, but he seemed rational, at least. His scolding was nothing that she wouldn’t have heard throughout her life of him training her.

Flames calmed slightly as he padded toward her, his paws leaving burnt prints upon the ground as he approached. He did not press further into her personal bubble than necessary, eyes scanning over her in a manner than was brutally judgemental and utterly familiar. ”You have been running. Why?” As ever, he demanded answers and yet gave none to her unspoken questions that stared from her own eyes.

Shayne's words would be irritating to most people, perhaps downright infuriating. But as he spoke in his judgmental manner all too familiar to her, Ruth couldn't help but feel relieved. Violent he may be, but he seemed as rational as he was in life. With the immediate worry gone, a new mix of emotions flickered over her face, quick and muted due to her life of a warrior, and her current fatigue. There were relief, grief and gratitude, none of which she would ever acknowledge.

Instead, she focused on the task at hand. Survival.

"I know." Ruth rumbled at the wolf, jaded as she finally sheathed the knife and crouched gingerly next to the man she'd stabbed to death. "Got poisoned. It complicated things. I'll live." She explained tersely, as she fished through the corpse's pockets in search of information. It helped her gather her focus, and not pay too much attention to Shayne inching closer. Though she did keep him in peripheral vision, by sheer force of habit.

Others would've gotten a much feistier response from her, but her stepfather's judgmental attitude was something she could tolerate, if not accept wholly. So, she let him inspect her sorry state as he would. There was no hiding it from him, or from anyone, really. Especially the angry, freshly cauterized wound across her side, clothes and armor yawning from where the blade had struck.

Her search yielded nothing annoyingly enough, but it gave her time to remember Shayne hadn't answered her question. The flickering flame that was her temper rose to that, as it had been a long while since anyone ignored her demands. Without harsh consequences at least.

Still sitting on her haunches, Ruth turned her amber eyes back on Shayne, giving him a tired scowl. "Shayne. What happened to you? You're not supposed to be here." She demanded, the haunting look of her father doing nothing to temper her fierce tone.

He came close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his flames. It was not quite hot enough to be uncomfortable, but it was still rather warm, to anyone without fire in their veins. He didn't touch her, but he did clearly investigate her wounds and the rest of her, his nose brushing close to the cauterized wound and his grumble was clearly disapproving of the job she had done. Not that he could fix it now, but it irritated him that he had not found her in time to ensure that it was done in a way that would heal quickest.

She settled back a few moments later after her search of the body revealed nothing useful, and then it was her scowl upon him. A familiar scowl, one he had endured through the years of his raising her to be a military protege. Her question came sharply, demanding to know what he was doing there, and the wolf let out a snort of laughter before his voice came once more. "If you can find an answer to the question, let me know. The gods did not take my spirit. Perhaps they could not, perhaps my will to live was too strong, or perhaps there is too much blood on my hands for me to pass into an eternity of peace." His flames settled, flickering through his fur as they so often had in life.

His tongue swiped over his jaws once more, and he stepped within reach of her, sniffing much as he would have in life as he inspected her once again, the judgement replaced by the slightest tilt of concern. "Regardless, I still walk this realm when I wish it, and occasionally I am drawn to interfere in situations, when it is not yet someone's time to die. Perhaps the gods thought me a good guardian for the doorway into death."

Concern that would not have shown in life leaked into his voice as Shayne wrinkled his nose slightly at her, not quite a snarl, though his teeth showed stark white against his muzzle for a moment. "This poison... what did they use? You are sure you will recover in a timely manner?" He knew his answers only would bring more questions, but his concern for her life was in the forefront. If nothing else, dying had certainly taught him that caring for others was not a weakness.
