Shandor smiled softly as he entered the Reinier's barn. They always had a good selection of horses, both known and unknown, and he enjoyed checking over them every time. But today he'd been called in specifically to look over the trader's horse. Nymue had been late this year, and the storm still swirled outside, though it had lightened since her arrival. Even so, Shandor found himself pulling off a few layers as he closed the door behind him. The stable was warm due to the heat of the horses, and with his outer layers, he also shed the bulk of the snow that had gathered upon him.

The man ran his fingers through his hair, and dug through his pockets to make sure they held the small, dried pieces of apple that he kept as treats for the horses. He walked down the line of stalls, petting noses and speaking softly, feeding bits of apple to each animal he passed. Eventually, he came to the one he had been called for. Obsidian. Bought locally, Shandor had a vague memory of the large beast from when he was just a colt, all lanky legged and disproportionate. Seeing him now, the man grinned. Obsidian had truly grown into his frame.

He murmured gentle nothings to the gelding as he offered him bits of apple, breathing into the gelding's nose and breathing in the scent of hay that the horse's breath carried. Horse greetings were so simple, in his opinion. In mere moments, the man had slipped into Obsidian's stall and was going over the horse. He groomed him as he went, but it was a very basic grooming. Mainly, Shandor wanted to make sure his wind was good, and that his hooves were sound. The journey had been hard on Nymue, and Bear was concerned about the horse as well.

He was holding the good-natured gelding's back hoof in his hand, cleaning it out and feeling through the more tender areas of the hoof to test that it was sound when he heard a noise at the entrance to the stall. He didn't look back at first, simply calling out a greeting. "Hello. Could you distract this lad with a handful of grain while I finish?"

The storm had passed, but Nymue knew there would be no traveling for a good while yet. As winter had officially set in, they could only expect more snow and ice. Nymue wasn’t fool enough to try and travel in it, and she certainly wasn’t going to risk the health and safety of her horse, Obsidian, just to appease her nerves about staying in one place for too long. Besides… she was ill, and wouldn’t be of any use to anyone, if she died of sheer stubbornness. The wording wasn’t hers, but she could respect it.

Speaking of stubbornness, the reluctant patient and house guest wasn’t cowed enough to stay in bed, necessarily. Nymue had woken from a nap to find that she was unattended… and decided to take this opportunity to go and check on Sid. Obsidian. Nym was still a bit weak, but determination fueled her. No doubt, Sid was perfectly safe and warm -else Bear would have informed her otherwise- but Nymue needed to just see him. Obsidian was all she had, and he was probably as close to a child and friend as she was ever going to have.

Carefully, Nymue navigated her way to the barn without being seen (as far as she knew). She may have looked a little conspicuous, given that she wore no shoes and was only in a plain white nightdress that had been given to her to wear. At least she’d had the sense to take one of her blankets with her, and wrap it about herself like a shawl. The cold and wet against her feet made Nymue regret not looking for footwear, but she’d live. At least the barn would be strewn with hay.

Upon stepping inside the nice, warm barn, a voice called out to Nymue and she froze on the spot. Drat… Who on earth could that be? It wasn’t Bear, so that was a small miracle; he’d probably toss her over his shoulder and carry her back to bed. Gently, of course. Anyway. Nym peered into Obsidian’s stall, and found that it was Shandor. Not much better than finding Bear… but at least he probably wouldn’t have the gumption to haul her back to her bed.

Sheepishly, Nym cleared her throat and approached Sid. She’d brought a small leather pouch with her that the horse most certainly recognized. It held sugar cubes. Nym winked and produced a couple, holding her hand out for Sid to nibble from. He knew better than to nibble on her, of course. ”That’s my good boy…” she said, softly, and petted his velvety nose. ”You best be staying out of trouble, young man. We’re gonna be here for a while. Wouldn’t do to wear out our welcome, hm?” Oh the irony of it… Nymue wasn’t exactly behaving, by sneaking out to the barn against Healer’s orders. Eh… details. Maybe Shandor didn’t know she was on bedrest?

The horse contentedly munched on the treats from his owner, allowing Shan to continue looking over that last hoof with no objections. The man felt along his joints as he placed the hoof back upon the ground, and straightened, patting the gelding and nodding in silent satisfaction. His voice a quiet murmur as he pet the horse a moment more before looking over at Nymue. One dark brow rose slightly at the sight of her, in nothing but a nightgown, blanket, and no shoes to speak of. The healer blinked at her before offering a genuinely welcoming smile "Nymue."

For a moment, it looked as though he might step forward to envelope her in a hug before he turned, patting Obsidian's neck before he slipped out of the stall with a gently scolding tone to his voice. "You shouldn't be out here like that, Miss." After shutting the stall firmly, he pulled off his jacket, a thick, leather coat lined with soft wool, and swung it around her shoulders, settling it firmly on her. It dwarfed her, but it was very warm, and his own body heat lingered in it. He didn't linger on the scold though, but he did look down at her bare feet pointedly before raising a brow and changing the subject.

'I figured you'd come check on your horse sooner or later. You'll be happy to know that he's sound and healthy. His fur will keep him warm through the winter, it looks like. " Dark green eyes settled upon Nymue, thoughtful as he looked at her, and he couldn't resist asking after a moment. "Aren't you supposed to be in bed?"

Luckily enough, Shandor continued his ministrations with her horse, when Nymue came forward to distract Obsidian. Really, Shan didn't seem to notice her state of undress until after he'd finished looking Sin over, and even then, he didn't much comment. Rather, he greeted Nym with a warm smile, which the huntress easily returned. "Shandor." she replied, bracing herself for the possible hug to come her way. It wouldn't be the first time that Nymue had been enveloped by those arms, and she'd gotten a little used to it.

However, rather than the customary hug, Shandor stepped right past Nymue as he made his way out of the stall, and issued a slight scolding. Nym looked down at herself, bare feet and all, and blushed faintly. "I couldn't find my boots." she mumbled. To be precise, her boots and clothes had been absconded with, to keep her indoors. Also to be cleaned, but that was just a side bonus. The real goal had been to make it impossible for Nymue to venture out of doors... or out of Miador, for that matter. Not that she planned on doing that, now. She was stubborn; not suicidal.

Nym blinked, when Shandor removed his coat and draped it about her shoulders. With as petite as she was, Nymue practically swam in the garment. However, she wasn't about to begrudge the warmth, or the report that her horse child was hale and healthy. However, she had the presence of mind to be at least somewhat contrite at the remark about being in bed. "Am I? Well. A little fresh air won't hurt me. And besides, I missed Sid something fierce."

Obsidian poked his nose through the stall window, and Nym fed him the last treat, before placing a kiss and a little affectionate raspberry on his nose. "Yes, you fuzzy giant. I missed you." He kept trying to nibble at her palm, with his lips, and she chuckled. "No more cookies; you've eaten them all." Nym petted him and cast a wary gaze up at Shandor. "And I suppose you're going to tell on me. I'm sure Bear will be along, soon enough." If he'd discovered that Nym was gone, he'd probably be having kittens right about then.

Shandor smiled slightly at the barely contrite response, and the excuse that she had missed her horse. He allowed her a moment before she spoke of him telling Bear that she had slipped out, and the man smiled a little wider, leaning forward in a conspiratorial manner. "Tell you what, I won't tell him. On one condition. He moved swiftly then, sweeping her up into his arms with ease. She was so small, and he was not much smaller than Bear himself. Picking her up he could have done with a single hand. Smirking at her now, with her cradled against his warm chest, he spoke again. "The condition is that you go back inside, and if not stay in bed, at least stay in your room where you can rest."

He didn't ask for her agreement really. It was either allow him to take her back or deal with Bear dragging her back while scolding her the whole way. His was the much quieter, less embarrassing option. So, he started to move regardless, moving swiftly out of the barn and double checking for anyone daring the weather before moving toward where he knew she was staying. His voice was quiet, but warm "You know Bear merely cares for your well being, don't you? He worries for you, out all alone in the wilds. More so when you come in and you're behind because you got sick, while alone." Green eyes pierced her for a moment with seriousness before he looked ahead, wading through the snow. "We all worry for you when you are late for your runs of trade. Regardless of what you think, you are part of Miador."

The broad smile from Shandor was not unexpected. In Nymue's experience, he had always seemed the jovial sort; she rather envied him that. When he leaned in close, Nym cocked an ear in his direction, willing to listen to his terms. However, she wasn't expecting to suddenly be scooped up like an errant child. It produced a rather undignified squeak from the petite huntress, which caused a deep blush of embarrassment to sweep over her cheeks. Naturally, she flailed a little bit, but didn't have the heart to smack the giant of a man.

"Shandor!" Nym yelped, squirming in his hold. "I can walk, you know!" She hadn't been carried about since she was a child, and it was thoroughly embarrassing. Plus... Shandor was a little on the tall side, and Nym wasn't overly fond of being suspended up high. However, the healer didn't really give her the opportunity to argue the matter further. He started walking, and the chill of the air outside of the barn as enough to have Nym curling into Shandor's warmth, rather than trying to squirm out of his hold.

The healer's next words gave Nym pause.

Bear worried about her? Regularly? That's what it sounded like... And apparently he wasn't the only one. It was a little unsettling to be told she was part of a place that she'd never had the courage to actually put down roots in. A place she rather wanted to call home... But it would only bring trouble to the people of Miador, and Nymue couldn't conscience it. Her uncle had no power, here, but it didn't mean he couldn't find a way to do ill, if he became aware of her presence.

For a few moment, Nymue was silent; processing what she'd been told.

"I'm not trying to flout Bear's hospitality..." she murmured, tentatively. "I'm just... not accustomed to being looked after. I've been alone, for years, and... I've just gotten used to keeping people at a distance. I've had to." With all of the constant uncertainty in her life, Nym couldn't exactly afford to get close to people.

Without pause, he paid attention to her words, even as he approached where she was staying and shouldered his way through doors. Surprisingly,he was very quiet for a large man, slipping past others who should have, perhaps, noticed them. Once inside, and out of easy sight of others, he set Nymue upon her feet, and offered her his arm instead, to continue escorting her to her room. "You don't need to be alone anymore, Nymue. There are people here who care for you. Some more so than simply as a passing trader who provides fur. Whatever your troubles are, they are in your past, and we are here in the present."

He looked down at her, pausing, his eyes serious. "Here, we are a community. We face each others troubles together and are stronger for it. I hope that sometime you will come to trust in that. I don't expect you to simply settle in. I still travel, after all... but let yourself be with us as a home when you are here, and stop fleeing so quickly. Bear would clear his own room if it meant ensuring you had some place to sleep besides the forest."

Upon noticing how easily Shandor had been able to sneak her past prying eyes (eyes that might potentially alert Bear or the healer of her being out of bed), Nymue found it rather difficult to complain about his having insisted on carrying her. For as large a man as Shan was, he moved with the silent grace of a feline on the prowl. Quite impressive!

Note to self: Get him to teach YOU how to do that. Nym told herself, inwardly.

And Shandor continued to surprise Nymue, by setting her down once they were out of sight. Points in his favor... Again. The huntress actually took his arm, when it was offered, which she would probably have turned down otherwise. Well. If it had been anyone else... apart from Mr. Reinier, of course. Nymue had been groomed to be a lady, but she sometimes eschewed the lessons she'd learned, out of pure stubbornness. Did that come as any surprise?

Shandor's words rattled her, yet again. How had she come to establish such... rapport among the people of Miador, without realizing it? However, when he tried to tell her that her problems were the past, Nymue's expression was dubious. Shandor, it's not that simple."

Apparently that was enough to halt the gentle giant, and he fixed Nym with a somewhat stern-looking expression before continuing to speak. The girl's heart felt tight, and she had to take several calming breaths, to keep the tears at bay. She hadn't even realized just how much she wanted to make Miador her home, up to now. But could she conscience it?

Heavens... and the punctuation about Bear struck such a chord within, that Nymue had to turn her face away and swallow back another wave of unshed tears. Dammit... she was made of tougher stuff than this!

"Sh-Shandor, you don't understand. However much I'd like to settle down, it'd be too dangerous; for everyone." A traitorous tear rolled down one cheek, swiftly followed by one or two on the other cheek, and Nym quickly wiped them away. "Look, I'll... If we could just get back to my room, I'll explain. Then you'll see..."

Shandor watched as she swallowed back emotion, and though he caught sight of her tears, he made no mention of them. Instead,as she insisted that it wasn't that simple, and that she'd explain, he turned and continued to escort her to her room, his presence silent and solid. The man was not very different from Bear, really, despite their difference in ages. He was solid, and steady, patient and caring. He took care of his people, and he included the people of Miador, and Nymue, among them. But he also could recognize the strength of her emotion and made allowances.

The journey to her room was brief, but silent, and as he entered, he carefully let the door remain cracked. The last thing he needed was for someone to assume that he was in her room for any sort of nefarious purposes. He guided her to the bed urged her to sit before poking the flames of the small fireplace awake and adding more wood. From there, he tugged a chair from by the hearth over to the bed and settled into it. His frame made it creak but it held steady as he leaned forward and looked at her with deep green eyes.

"Explain then. Why is this not so simple?"

The rest of the way to the room, they walked in silence, and Nymue did her best to regain some semblance of composure. She wiped her face dry, squared her shoulders, and straightened her spine. Tears were useless, and she had no legitimate reason for them. Therefore, they needed to not be happening. Strange logic? Maybe.

Realization dawned. Someone had made the bed, and refreshed the hot water skin, while she'd been gone. Oops... well... maybe they assumed she was with Bear? Unless it had been Bear. Double oops.

Shandor was soon settling into a chair that he had brought to the bedside, and Nymue looked down at her lap, smoothing the bedclothes. "I haven't talked to anyone about this, before." she stammered, tone rather... uncharacteristically fragile.

"By the time I was eighteen... the only family I had left was my uncle; my father's older brother." Best to start as close to the beginning as possible, but she wasn't about to subject Shandor to her whole life's story. That'd just be inconsiderate. "He was a warrior of considerable rank, and wasn't particularly kind, and... he always made me feel ill at ease. Always... looking at me. Making excuses to touch me. Always talking of how I needed a suitable husband, and soon."

The girl grimaced, and wrapped her arms about herself, as though to ward away the memory of those touches and glances. "About... six years or so ago, he came into my room at night, and... fell upon me. I think he was drunk. I fought, and he shifted... so he didn't get what he was after, but he wouldn't get off of me, so I... I struck him with the candlestick on my bedside table, and I ran."

By now, Nymue was shaking, and she had tucked her knees to her chest, hugging them tight. "He's been looking for me, ever since. Every once in a while, I'll see posters with my portrait, offering a considerable reward for my return. I fear that settling down anywhere could ensure my recapture, or... or cause problems for anyone harboring me. Legally, he is my guardian until such time as I marry. He has the papers to prove such."

Whether or not the documents truly held any weight, at this point, she didn't know... and didn't want to find out. "Technically, his power lies only in Plenia's Port, but that doesn't mean he couldn't somehow use his influence to rain hell down, wherever I go." Pained amber eyes lifted to Shandor's, pleading with him to understand. "So you see... I can't possibly stay."
