During the winter months, Aoife spent her time in the high reaches of Aver, nestled comfortably in her family’s sprawling estate on the outskirts of Onryx. Its great walls and arching windows blending in near perfectly to the mountainous winter landscape around it. So much of the small town she had grown up in was abandoned now, but she did not waste time in fretting about that. In the still quietude of her heart, Aoife knew that Onryx would return to its former state if that was what Hentu willed, but for now her ice god seemed satisfied enough in his children fraternizing with Zematri’s in their new, jointly crafted capital. Aoife herself was skeptical of what the Water Tribe had to offer to Aver even after all these years, and as such she only remained in Sirenia during the warmer months when many of them traveled south to their alabaster shores.

Here in Onryx, there was always duty to partake in. Dressed all in white, and with her long, pallid hair pulled back into a professionally tailored intricate braid, Aoife made her daily journey down the winding stone stares to the icy shores of the Frozen Pool. Beneath that thick layer of ice, an entire civilization lay. The ancestors of old were buried there, facing upward toward the sky, forever encased by the waters frigidity in the perfect image of what they had been during their lifetimes. When she reached a smaller, almost entirely separate pool, she knelt down to her knees and brushed the dusting of snow away so the faces of her own ancestors looked unseeingly up at her. And thus, she began to murmur her prayers and her gratitude, appearing little more than a pale wraith against a sea of snow and stone.

The cold bit at his bare skin and though it bothered him, Euwen kept a fur coat with him at all times that was surrounding his shoulders. It was easier for him this way rather than having a big wooly jacket on. His boots didn't help much with the cold but he was heading back to the main capital of the Aver when he caught sight of the woman near by. Stopping in his tracks, Euwen would glance in his direction, whistling to get her attention. He was curious as to why she was all the way out here. Though Euwen usually kept close to himself and distant to others, deep down he was a real sweetheart.

Aoife crouched there for some time, her icy eyes drifting from one frozen face to another. The incantations of her prayers sometimes drifted to silence, and other times rose to soft whispers that were quickly swallowed up by the gales of winter swirling about her. During these mornings with her ancestors, the young woman lost track of time. Every so often, she would reach out to lay a palm over the ice as if that frozen barrier did not exist, and that if she were able to brush her fingers over their eyelids, she’d unlock some piece to their past. It wasn’t true, but the instinct to try had her hands move in featherlike motions anyway.

After some time, a noise broke through Aoife’s meditation. At first, it sounded like nothing more than a high-pitched gust of wind, but it lasted longer than the breeze that passed by. The young woman raised her head and turned it, piercing blue eyes settling on the figure in which the whistle came. It was a man, that much she could tell from this distance, but she did not call back or move from her delicate kneeling position. Whoever it was, if they wished to speak to her they would need to come closer or leave her to her prayers in peace. Her leveled stare showed caution rather than curiosity, and its intensity implied insult to the interruption of her meditation.

She didn't say anything back and that was alright as he had already begun to move closer. And as he got closer he realized that she had been meditating and Euwen felt his face flush with embarrassment, stopping a short distance from her to give her space as Euwen would get down on his own knees and stay in silence. By no means did he mean to interrupt her meditation and would gladly apologize if he hadn't decided to keep his mouth shut now and close his own eyes. He knew some things of meditating but not much, though he would definitely try.

Silence still filled the space between them, but the young woman noticed the stranger drifting closer. Here in her home territory, Aoife was unusually relaxed about the approach of an unknown man, and she did not shy away when he came within a handful of feet from her. That icy stare merely followed his movements as he knelt down into the snow and closed his eyes, perhaps demonstrating that he had discovered the err of his ways.

Aoife sat a little taller, lacing her fingers together and placing them in the fabric of her skirts atop her lap. She regarded him still without speaking for a few moments, but at last she summoned up her quiet voice. “Hello, Sir.” Her head tipped, the expression on her face a stoic blankness. “Are you here to pray?” By appearances alone, he didn’t seem to belong here. His heavy coat suggested he had not come from the high latitudes of the north, but she wasn’t sure why anyone who didn’t belong here would venture so far away from Sirenia into the frosty winters of Onryx.

Icy eyes glanced up when she spoke to him and he found himself smiling softly. "Well, no I hadn't but when I saw that I had bothered you I figured that it would just be polite to respect your silence." He truly was a gentleman and sometimes that got the best of him. He had been traveling back home when he had stumbled upon her and though she never spoke to him until now, Euwen felt that he had made a mistake and in silence wanted to apologize for it. "Who do you pray to?" Surely there was a God or someone she prayed to. Euwen didn't like the Gods at all.

Aoife’s gaze was careful and astute, taking its time to land on the external details she could gather from this stranger sitting by her. She was certain, the more she looked upon him, that she had never seen this man before, which was an unusual occurrence so high in the northern territories. The expressions he offered her were amicable enough, with soft smiles and voicing his concerns of politeness, and the young woman simply watched him coolly. She appeared neither offended nor pleased to have her prayers interrupted.

When he asked who she was praying to, the wraith of a woman turned her icy eyes back to the frozen water beneath her, where the snow had been brushed away. “You are kneeling above my ancestors.” She answered, her voice quiet and matter-of-fact. She reached out and placed a palm over them, those eternally open eyes forever only inches away. “All of the great people of Ice are buried here in this pool. The descendants that are wise enough return here to ask for guidance.” Again, her eyes broke from the corpses beneath her and leveled on this strange man near her. If he were to brush away the snow in front of him, surely he too would see the faces of the dead staring up at him from below.
