Lilith took a step back before she had even consciously registered her own movement. Though it was only a matter of a couple of inches, Lilith cursed herself, turning her muzzle away from the other wolf as her eyes flashed in frustration. She had no reason to retreat. In fact, she had more right to be here than he did! Her lips parted to bark an angry remark at him, but instead she found that she didn't quite have the energy for an argument - a rare occasion indeed. She raised her head, her eyes already rolling in their sockets before they deigned to meet his. They shot for a split second to the rabbit, then back to the strikingly coloured wolf. Huffing through her nose, she flopped unceremoniously onto the ground, resting her chin on her crossed paws. Looking up at him with a world-weary expression, Lilith responded. ”My name is not Lily.” She emphasised each word as if she was speaking to a particularly dull-witted child. But though she tried, she couldn't stop her name flashing through her mind for a second. Lilith. She couldn't say exactly why she didn't want the man to know her name – after all, she knew what he purported to be his – but she cursed the slip nevertheless, and just prayed that he hadn't been paying attention, completely unaware that he already knew her given name.

Maybe it was the wind in her fur or the sun on her back, or the fact that she'd finally managed to get out to stretch her legs, but Lilith didn't feel quite so quick to anger. Where she almost certainly would have been defensive a mere sunrise ago, now she simply lifted a shoulder. ”Everyone needs a change of scenery once in a while.” Ignoring the fact, of course, that she probably frequented these woods more often that Kai himself. She shot another glance to the rabbit, already trying to control the grumbling in the pit of her stomach. Yet still she hedged. ”Maybe... If you truly don't object.”

Gentle amber watched as she flopped onto the ground in a huff, denying that her name was Lily. It came out a little like a pout, and Kai's tail wagged lightly in amusement at it. Her stomach rumbled and he held back laughter as he waited for her answer. At her grudging acceptance of sharing the rabbit with him, he shifted, tugging the rabbit to the grass between them and settling where it was within reach of both of them.

It was a short meal, between the two of them, and Kai was polite, leaving the choicest bits for her. But a single rabbit was only a snack, an appetizer for the two of them. He licked his chops, even as he crunched through small bones and flicked his ears at her once again. "So." His jaw opened in a lupine grin as he looked at her once again. "Are you still hungry? I am."

Kai rose to his feet and stretched, already sniffing at the air. "Join me, won't you, lady? I bet we can take down a buck between us." Kai bounced slightly as he waited for an answer from Lilith.

Lilith noted his amusement from the corner of her eye, rolling her brown irises skyward. She was half expecting the offer to have been a joke - “you want a rabbit, you better go catch one!” - but he pulled the little snack to a place that was equidistant between them, and he showed rather more manners than she had been prepared for. Though she had been ready to eat the pieces that were usually thrown into the pig's slop bucket, or into a pot to thicken out a stew, Lilith was surprised to find Kai taking those pieces for himself, leaving her with the tastiest portions. She tried to nudge a few of the delicious morsels over to him, but he either genuinely didn't see them, or was chivalrously ignoring her – if that was even a thing.

It didn't take long to demolish the little creature, and Lilith bit back a whine. She loved rabbit, but you had to chase down so many of them to make a decent meal that it was hardly worth the effort. There was no point in lying – Lilith rose and dropped one shoulder in an approximation of a shrug. But the word she chose didn't at all match her laissez-faire gesture. ”Famished.”

It wasn't until Kai mentioned a buck that Lilith rose to her feet, rather more slowly than he had. One at a time, she stretched out her legs as she kept her eyes averted to the ground. Perhaps this was cheating a little, but she was using her connection to the elements to scout the best direction to go. Location pinpointed, Lilith's muzzle dropped into a smile as she met his gaze. ”Not only will I join you... I bet I can bring one down before you.” Once the challenge was issued, Lilith wasted no time. She shot through the clearing, her flank brushing his just slightly as she raced past him towards the herd of deer that was apparently quite happily watering itself just under a kilometre away.

As she dodged the trees, she could tell that her human mind wanted to puzzle over his behaviour, but she didn't quite care enough to dig at it. She wanted to have fun, she wanted to run and she wanted to eat. Anything else could wait.

She seemed to hesitate, and for a moment, Kai wondered if this was when she would refuse his company and not want to hunt even though he knew she could not possibly be full on half of a rabbit. But only moments later, she tossed out that she could catch one first, and took off at a run. Mordekai let out a bark of laughter and launched himself after her.

Without hesitation, he allowed her the lead, taking the beta position and flanking her as she ran. She seemed to know where she was going, and the man didn't mind. He wasn't planning to turn it into a competition, he merely wanted food. It wasn't long before he caught a waft of scent from the ground. Deer, and recently passed through at that.

He let out a soft woof as he found a set of tracks, alerting her that they were close and waiting for her to lead the way.

Though Lilith often turned down the opportunity to hunt, it was very uncommon for her to do so when on four paws. Though she was ordinarily alone (through her own choice, she would be sure to inform), the addition of another wasn't necessarily terrible.

She huffed a quiet laugh of her own as she heard him tearing through the forest behind her to catch up. Rather embarrassingly, it didn't take too long, and Lilith expected him to pass her in a flash, laughing all the while. And again, she was wrong. Though normally her misjudgements would infuriate her, she could only find it within herself to be mildly bemused and a little confused. She was unable to give the problem much thought, though, as there was a bigger, better, meatier issue at hand.

Her head spun back to shoot a glare in his direction. Though he hadn't been overly loud, deer were skittish, and there had been no need for the noise – she was well aware of exactly where they were. But the sound also shifted her perspective – one deer between them both was better than no deer at all, and she wasn't as practiced as she pretended she was. She changed pace, creeping through the underbrush, occasionally aiming another warning expression behind her. The smallest mistake now, and the whole herd would vanish. When a large creature was just visible through the canopy ahead of her, Lilith paused, making sure she had Kai's attention before raising her left paw slowly and nodding towards him. Without waiting to see if he had understood her gesture, Lilith broke right, pouncing through the brush and towards her target.

Perhaps luckily, Kai had maintained a light rapport with her. When she raised her paw at him, he needed no translation. Soon as she broke right, he broke left. Hunting was a delicate balance between partners, and his talent gave an advantage in that arena. He moved swiftly knowing exactly where he needed to be and when for Lilith's plan to work. The herd scattered as they broke out of the brush, but he didn't hesitate. In a flurry of motion between the two of them, he snarled up the bucks back legs and left it wide open for Lilith to make the kill.

Sweet, coppery blood spilled across his tongue as he helped her bring the animal down. Moments later they were both ripping into the meal. Kai politely stayed away fro, the choicest bits, though he would accept some of them if she offered. Indeed, despite his assertive sass while human, his actions as a wolf spoke of a submissive personality. He gave way to her with hardly even a return snarl.

A while later, with most of the deer gone, both of their bellies swollen with their enormous meal, Kai settled near her, licking the last of blood from his chops. His jaws opened in a lupine grin, amber eyes resting upon Lilith for a moment. "We make a decent team, Lily. What do you think?"

A thrum of worry niggled her, somewhere quite far back in her mind, even as she broke away from the strange wolf. There was no room for that, no time to think about it – there was a much more important task at hand (or at paw) to concentrate on first. Just as she had anticipated, the majority of the herd scattered before Lilith got close enough to catch them. No matter, though, for they weren't her target. She barely even saw them as they pounded through the forest, flattening the bush in their haste to escape. Her focus was solely on the buck – sheer single minded determination. She flew past a couple of choice deer who had broken in the wrong direction, but she didn't falter. A second after Kai's jaws locked around the deer's hind legs, Lilith whipped her head around, clamping her own jaws solidly around the beast's throat. She dimly registered a measure of awe and gratitude – as the buck did as his namesake suggested, convulsing in his final throes, Kai somehow managed to keep hold of the flailing limbs and avoid any damage to himself.

Lilith finally managed to get her feet properly under herself and, aided by Kai, wrestled the creature to the ground. She worried at its neck until only the last tremors of movement remained, then ripped unapologetically into its skin and muscle. Shamefully, it took a few swallows before any semblance of manners encroached on her conscience. Instead of saying anything, though, Lilith took what she thought was the much more subtle route. She herded him towards the better portions under the guise of her trying to get at specific parts of the animal they had felled together.

Finally sated, Lilith had time to think about his actions. After all, what better way to know a man? Words could not be trusted, no matter how charming they sounded. The more she thought about it, the more what came out of his mouth didn't seem to make sense. He seemed so confident, and yet he ceded control during a hunt, and allowed her to take whatever she pleased of the kill. That wasn't typical Alpha behaviour, and it put her on her guard. She groomed herself , almost paying more attention to him than to herself, and was almost shocked when he spoke. That shock quickly morphed into irritation, though, as he addressed her with a shortened version of her name. Sighing so dramatically that it heaved through her whole body, Lilith glared at him as best as she was able. ”My name. Is not. Lily.” But she had to concede his point, though she didn't have to like it. ”... I suppose we do.” She wanted to thank him, but the words wouldn't come, so instead, she rested her muzzle on her crossed paws. The silence stretched for a few beats. ”What are you still doing around here?” She asked, for once genuinely curious.

Mordekai laughed silently at her anger at being called Lily. To another wolf, perhaps, her glare would have been terrifying. But she was not in charge of him and he was free for now to create as much trouble as he possibly could before Khaal called him back to the ship and their troublemaking. He had taken note of her interest in him, though it was not obvious to the outside eye. Inwardly, though, he could feel the direction of her thoughts, and the manner in how he had confused her.

She conceded the point that they made a good team. He neglected to say that he could make a good team with anyone who he could touch thoughts with. There was no need to ruin the moment with such a thing. Instead, he simply watched her as her head lowered to rest on her paws, and he continued to lick blood spots from his chest and the remains of it from his jaws.

Genuine curiosity came with her next question, and he let out a low sound, a chuckle that came from a lupine throat. It was akin to a growl, but his tail thumped on the ground in amusement and his ears were up and relaxed. For a moment he debated upon making up a lie, some duty-bound reason that had kept him in the area. Would it be worth it? He decided to not, and his shoulders rolled in a shrug. Instead, for once, the truth came from him, with a lupine grin and another chuckle.. ”I like you. I thought I’d see if I could actually get some time to speak with you… y’know, when you weren’t busy threatening my life.”

He shifted slightly, scooting closer until his shoulder fur brushed hers. There he stopped, sending his amber gaze towards her as he lowered his own head to rest upon his paws, looking at her with something that might have been admiration in his eyes. ”I’ll admit I am rarely able to enjoy the company of women, even for conversation. Men are louts, and it’s rather nice to be around someone who is… more refined.”[b] He offered her a genuine grin, the words slipping charismatically from him. They were at least partially true. Most of the men he ended up around were rather unsavory. And the women he knew on a regular basis…. just the same. Lilith was… different, and fascinating because of it. A deep breath came, taking in her scent for a moment as his tail flicked softly from side to side. [b]”Besides… a hunt is not a hunt if one simply leaves right after. Running on a full stomach isn’t comfortable.

Though people hardly turned and ran from her, Lilith's brusque tone and general air tended to have people beating a hasty retreat as soon as they were able. Not exactly terrifying, but it did the job of getting rid of people when she wanted to be alone – which was really quite a lot of the time. Lilith backtracked over the time they had spent together previously – it wasn't much, but she wanted to know if he was braver (or dumber) than most or if (for some reason that she couldn't fathom) she was somehow off her game. The result of her analysis was inconclusive. Either she was biased, or there wasn't enough information to go on. Of course she wasn't concerned about the feelings of this one man, so it must be the latter. The only thing for it was time, exposure. He'd have to learn eventually. Or maybe (and this was the completely ridiculous option – so far-fetched that she didn't even consciously entertain the idea) she actually wanted to spend more time with him.

Though Lilith immediately eschewed his words (he was either lying, or after something, which only proved her decision to be suspicious of him correct), she couldn't help but still be relieved for the coverage of fur on her face. Whether or not she believed the words, a blush had come to her cheeks all the same, and she would just have to seethe inwardly until it disappeared. Though said fur also brought about an absence of eyebrows, Lilith mimicked raising one anyway. Old habits die hard. She huffed and shook her head as she spoke, her tone indicating that she found him ridiculous, and his reasoning highly faulty. ”Why would you want to speak to someone who 'threatened your life'? Which, by the way, I did not do.” Or maybe she did... Her mind was a little fuzzy on the finer details of that night, but Kai did not need to know that.

He was in her personal space. Of course, that was a fairly common faux pas as, given the choice, Lilith would erect a barrier a mile around. Still, he was closer than their slight acquaintance gave him any right to be, so Lilith snarled as she shifted a few inches away. Given the energy, she would have moved further away, but as well as being tired from the hunt and the large meal, Lilith rather got the feeling that she would tire of this 'game' before Kai did. Better to save the energy for bigger battles.

She fairly howled with laughter at his words, though the reaction had the potential to cause offense. ”Refined?!” She managed to choke the word out between peals of laughter, and it came out sounding more like a curse word than a compliment. She wrestled with her amusement for a moment longer before she managed to get it under control, her voice sounding strained as she spoke again, breezing past her bout of hilarity as if it had never happened. ”Then surely that begs the question – what is a hunt called if one does leave right after?” Could she summon the effort to prove a point? Almost certainly. Would she? Well, that depended on his answer.

He let his jaw open slightly in a grin as she responded to him. It was amusing, that she sought to respond to, and contradict, everything that he had said. Perhaps she hadn’t truly threatened his life, at least not directly, but it had been close enough as far as he was concerned. He merely shrugged in response, a non-committal answer to her question. As she snarled lightly and shifted away from him, his ears tilted submissively, and he didn’t push her boundaries. Yet.

Moments later she erupted into laughter, and he followed her surface thoughts over being called refined. Perhaps if she knew the company he usually kept, she would understand that even as abrasive as she was, she was still much more refined than those he often rubbed shoulders with. It took her a few moments before she regained control and redirected conversation once again to his last statement.

Kai chuckled lightly at her question, raising his head and tilting his ears toward her as the words came smoothly again. ”A sore stomach and tired paws, that’s what. Hunts and meals are always best finished off by a nap or conversation.” He shifted again, disguising it as allowing his hind paws to slip out, sliding to one side. It shifted him within reach again though, fur brushing against the tips of her fur. ”Perhaps I am sentimental though, as I would also call it a disappointment, and perhaps even rude. A one-hunt stand? But can you blame me for wanting to remain in the company of beauty?” His tne was such that he could be either serious or sarcastic. Despite that, the compliment came across as quite sincere.
