Aoife did not often venture away from her estates in either Sirenia or Onryx. Her life existed on a constant route between the two, balancing her family and worship with studies and preparations to be married. Now that she had finally been betrothed to a man, however, the young woman had harnessed a quiet determination to explore what she could of her profession before she was potentially locked down into maternal servitude.

It was that determination that brought her to Dessus, the ramshackle port town of Aver that had been destroyed so many times over, and yet the salted sailors and naval warriors always seemed to bring its bones back to life. She had traveled here in the company of her elder brother, but when she ventured out onto the alabaster sand shores, he ambled into town to give her privacy. She was a winter wraith out in those ocean dunes, her white hair and dress fluttering in the wind away from her fragile frame. Every so often, she reached down to daintily lift a piece of driftwood and held it in her slender fingers. To an onlooker, it would not be clear what she was doing, exploring the forgotten shards of the past on the western shores of Aver.

To say that Bran and Gareth had some mixed feelings about what had happened over these past few months and years was an understatement. They had been caught in bed together - nothing overly inappropriate, like them sleeping with each other or anything like that. Gareth had let Bran rest his head against his chest due to the morning being so cold and wintry. Unfortunately, that backfired.

The two had been expelled from their kingdom, losing their titles for daring to be in love in such a harsh country.

It wasn't necessarily bad though - they had been able to be married here in Dessus, and hopefully could start a family.

They rode the sandy beaches of Dessus on their horses, looking ahead. A young woman stood ahead of them. They rode towards her for conversation.

For some time, Aoife wandered the beach undisturbed by wanderers or the few settlers that had rebuilt their shacks in Dessus. She scoured the sands for the lost remnants of war vessels, but thus far had come up with nothing save for the waterlogged, ancient skeletons of trees and other woody vegetation. Running her hands over the gnarled wood usually brought back only memories of darkness and silence, no doubt from centuries spent deep in the bowels of the Zemiragar Sea and beyond.

After placing another piece of driftwood back into the white sands, the young woman stood up tall and noticed a pair of horses heading in her direction. She stiffened, invisibly, and her icy gaze remained locked on them until they’d come within speaking distance. Upon those horses were two young men that she did not recognize, and her distrust in the seafaring people of Dessus had her take a step back, but she did not flee. “Good afternoon, sirs.” Her voice was cordial, but not entirely approachable. She could not be certain why they had detoured in her direction, but she felt no need to ask either. Aoife suspected, in her narrow world perspective, that she might not want to know the answer, if these were rogues and not fellow Averians.

The skies were filled with grey clouds as the two men finished approaching the young woman in front of them, smiling and offering their hands for a handshake. Despite this, the sun shone through the clouds. Sort of like how Bran was feeling about everything - dark and stormy, yet warm and happy about the fact he got to marry Gareth.

"Hello there. I am Bran, and this is my husband Gareth. A pleasure to meet you."

He hoped the company would not be unappreciated.

As the two men came nearer, it became clear that they meant her no harm. With disarming smiles and an air of friendliness about them, Aoife was more willing to abandon her initial suspicion that the two men might be bandits hoping to kidnap her. Both of them held out their hands for a handshake, but the wraith of a woman did not immediately react. Hesitant eyes fell on those hands for a moment before politeness took over, and she delicately and very limply draped her thin hand in their grips and then recoiled altogether, back into her sphere of physical privacy.

“Aoife Caomhánach.” she responded with her own name in turn, and her blank expression slipped back and forth between the two men. They were married? What sort of heathenry was Eudocia turning to? She allowed none of her doubt or judgment to cross her serene face, and instead she clasped her hands behind her back and stood tall, peering at them from where she stood. “What brings the both of you here to Dessus?”

The two men smiled, even though they knew what she was thinking. They all thought that way, the people they had known before their exile. Bran frowned at this. He had lost his entire family, his friends, hell, even the people he didn't get along with because he was happier with Gareth in his bed rather than a woman.

"My father found out. He exiled us here." Bran said firmly but not angrily, frustrated by everything. All he had wanted was a normal life, with a loving husband and children the two men would have been raising. Unfortunately, he received a punishment for simply being happy. It made his life hell every day since then.

Distracted by these two strange men atop their horses, Aoife had not been paying much attention to the rolling tide just beyond the three of them. Her focus instead had been on the shifts of smiles and frowns upon their faces – though she herself was not an emotional being, she had come to understand the complexity of expressions that more sentimental people chose to wear. Her head had tipped in thought, when a wave rolled over her ankles and made her step gracefully, her surprise of the sudden cold invisible, to the side and closer to these two men.

“I see. You are not from here, then.” she answered the more talkative one matter-of-factly, ignoring the frigid sting in her wet toes. “And you chose to act against your father’s will?” This concept was utterly foreign to Aoife Caomhánach, as a woman who had been taught since birth to respect and obey the will of her parents. She had never questioned their insights and rarely, if ever, reared against them in rebellion.

Bran's expression slowly turned from sadness and anger to more neutrality. "No, we are not from around here. We used to live on another land, far from here." He ignored the drizzle that had begun to fall and the sand between his toes. While he had been taught to obey his father's will, Bran never expected his father to exile him for preferring to sleep with another young man in his bed. "I had always obeyed him up until them. I wasn't going to leave Gareth behind."

Rain began to fall, then. A gentle mist just barely coming down to saturate everything below the sky. Raindrops collected along Aoife’s silver hair and the cloth of her dress, and her eyes squinted if only slightly to keep the water out of her eyes. “That was brave of you.” She stated simply, through it was impossible to say whether she meant it as a compliment for his dedication and courage or an insult against his decision to rear against his father. “Now that you are here, you will fight for Aver, I pray?” This question was gently prying, but Aoife’s curiosity and caution momentarily got the best of her. She wanted to know, at the very least, if she was entertaining two men who were a threat to her, or if she could call them kin and be unafraid of their presence.

"Thank you. It was a very difficult decision, and I just wish my father could have seen us for what we are - normal people who are in love. Unfortunately, he was... misguided, by his faith in his gods. I had always thought he would be more accepting since he was in most other things... but not this, evidently. And yes, we will fight for Aver should the time come for us to fight. Now, though, the two of us will just stay here and enjoy our life together."

Bran's cloak billowed in the breeze as the rain softly feel until it eventually went away.
